Review

'I just wish I'd had this as a reference twenty-five years ago.'

-- Glen Ward, CEO, Syngency

'It's a rarity among business books: incisive, humane and strategic and also a rollicking good read.'

-- Dan Oakey, Director, Deloitte

'Roche's book reveals that beneath the covers there lurks a sharp and insightful business brain. I learned a lot from working alongside him - and am sure any aspiring leader will too.'

-- David Kohn, founder and CEO, The Multichannel Expert

'I really enjoyed reading David's book. It's a real source of inspiration and a fountain of advice and knowledge.'

-- Julia Leckey, founder and former CEO, Honest

'This is not your typical "do this, do that" boring, bullet-pointed business book. David really understands the complexities of becoming an even more successful CEO than you already are. The anecdotes, case studies and wry humour help bring it all alive for me and make it a wonderful and refreshing read. I learned a lot.'

-- Julian Sharples, CEO, As it is

5.0 out of 5 stars A clear manual for getting to the top: practical, thoughtful - and fun!

I've spent most of my working life as the CEO of early-stage companies, often as a founder, but also had a couple of stints as a 'corporate CEO'. David absolutely nails what it takes to become the person who runs a big company, how to grow into the job, and how to plan your way there. It's an excellent read, written by an excellent mind. Anyone wishing to advance into positions of senior leadership will benefit from reading this - not just the people about to become 'First time CEOs'. Nice work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Full of useful experience
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 9, 2024
This book is full of experience and well worth a read. I am not a CEO, nor will I ever be, but there is enough in here for all of us. The style is both affable and authoritative. As an educator, I would have this book in the library of all schools, as support for Business Studies and as an essential text for CEO's in waiting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fills a real gap in the market
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 10, 2024
This book packs several careers' worth of experience into one, digestible read. It tackles head-on the two biggest issues with becoming a first-time CEO: (1) you're stepping into the unknown; and (2) it can be lonely at the top. Full of real-world wisdom and actionable insights, it's a book you can read in an afternoon. But you'll probably take months to digest and apply all the lessons.

Business books are often starchy, trite or stuffed with jargon. Not this one! Written with disarming humour, it's thoroughly recommended for anyone embarking on the CEO journey (or a newbie to any C-suite role).

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible, useful, practical ... and fun to read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 11, 2024
I had the good fortune to work for David in the mid-2000s so know what sort of business leader he is. And he really brings his skills, experience and personality to life in this book. As with David himself, this book is not some dry tome to be left unread on the bookshelf. Instead it contains genuinely useful tips, peppered with a stream of (often funny) real-life examples that illuminate and entertain. Give it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for all MBA Students
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 5, 2024
First Time CEO is a clearly written, intense lesson on how to succeed in the C-suite. It takes an outside-in and and inside-out look at the role of Chief Executive Officer. Author David Roche writes with an authority coming from experience and from long association with the women and men running top international companies today. While many would prefer to hear David Roche speak in person, myself included, First Time CEO runs a close second, as well as serving as a necessary reference for not only the first-time but the long-time serving CEO. Needless to say, required reading for all Business students.
